Up, Up and Away brings to life the tale of Marianne Montgolfier, Vincent Lunardi and Bernard Blanchard. As story balloonists they travel the world, letting the wind carry them from place to place, collecting, gathering and telling stories.

Eager to spread the art of story telling and to find new imaginative storytellers, they decide they can only visit places that they know will provide them with brilliant new stories and storytellers.

“You don’t have to just put normal stuff in your story you can put imposssible stuff in” KS2 pupil

“It can be hard to motivate the pupils, especially as they get older. This was something exciting, and real to inspire them, and the teachers. There were lots of opportunities to motivate the pupils” Year 5/6 teacher

The Umbrella Birds

Writer and Performer | Comedy

The Umbrella Birds, stars of BBC Radio 4’s The Ladies.

The Umbrella Birds was a comedy sketch group starring Kate Donmall, Susanna Hislop, Fran Moulds and Emily Watson Howes.

Led by Emily Watson Howes and produced by Avalon, they had three critically acclaimed shows at the Edinburgh Festival: W.C. (Underbelly, 2007), Gym (Pleasance Courtyard, 2008) and Sketches in a Shop Changing Room (Assembly Rooms, 2009).

The shows were made into two radio series, The Ladies, produced by Hat Trick for BBC Radio 4 (2009-2010).

Umbrella Birds: Sketches in a Shop Changing Room

“The Umbrella Birds are a rare and wonderful breed, an all-female sketch group who artfully and hilariously reflect the ups, downs and non-events of modern womanhood in a way that’s totally devoid of Cosmopolitan cliché. All four women are versatile, accomplished actors who prove a worthy match for the quality of the writing.” ★★★★ Nione Meakin, Chortle

Umbrella Birds: Gym

“A fantastic example of how a sketch show should be done.”
